Week 4: Using ICT for playing

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Enjoy playing with Bee Bots™. Encourage children to share and to take turns when pressing the control buttons. (PS8)

Examine a variety of early years ICT based games. Play some of the games and share feelings and views about the games. Help the children to respect the opinions of their peers. (PS5)

Communication, Language and Literacy

Lay out letter cards to make a giant keyboard. Play games where children are encouraged to find letters which start/finish/spell simple words. (L10)

Read Harry and the Robots by Ian Whybrow. Talk about the way computers can be used to make robots walk, speak and even do tasks in factories. Use stick puppets made from pictures and lolly sticks to retell the story. (L3, 4)

Use a computer or IWB to play ‘Find the letter’. Write simple words with a letter missing (e.g. c_t, _ot, hi_). Invite the children to suggest letters that could be used to complete the words. On further occasions, invite children to make up their own puzzles. (L10, 11)

Make a recording of children reciting nursery rhymes with changed words such as “Baa Baa Blue Sheep” or “Stan and Jill Went Up The Hill”. Later in the week enjoy listening to the tape and finding all the changed words. (L2, 4)
